Lactose free milk and soya spread is used sometimes but not very much for reasons previously stated. If i had my way she would have those all the time but it doesn't work that way I'm afraid.
Still making better meals for her but only 30% of her intake is made from 'good' foods. Having said that, even a greasy burger and cheese didn't effect her unduly.
Although there are still peaks in Novembers chart there were a much better consistency and more controllable than we have ever seen in the past. Trips to the shops were not dominated by 'where is the toilet if i need one'. Far from it. We have been out and the thought of bowel movements hasn't even crossed our minds and we have just shopped like normal people.
It's far from perfect and there is still plenty more to do: More 'better meals' and hopefully back on the lactose free milk (although i struggle to get her to agree). Onwards and upwards for December. The last couple of christmases have been really poor so lets hope that months shows similar results.
I should mention that she insists on taking imodium capsules sometimes against my advice (they contain lactose and do not stop the problem occuring).

I can imagine how very distressing this is for your mum and I'm glad you are being so supportive. I'm a little confused by your mum's diagnosis. I am not convinced that IBS is food related - more to do with the effects of stress on the body, although I accept opinions differ. Has your mum ever had a capsule endoscopy? This is a capsule that is swallowed and takes images of the bowel. It is much less emotionally and physically uncomfortable than the manual endoscopy. I ask because I wonder if your mum has diverticulitis. Sadly my mum had this condition but it was misdiagnosed as an ovarian cyst by the hospital. She had severe continence issues for over a year with a raised CRP (infection markers) in the blood. I'd suggest your mum return to her GP and insist that she be referred to a top gastro specialist. Perhaps you could do some research on the internet and suggest some names to the GP. She has a right to ask for a second opinion. I know your mum must hate hospitals, but if you pursue a cure then she will finally be able to visit her grandson. Good luck. I know this must be hard on you too.
Thanks for the comment. I agree it's not true IBS. That was just the closest match we could find seeing as Doctors refuse to give a proper diagnosis (but rather prefer to hand out pills by the bottle in the hope it will improve matters.)
Looks like we could have a name to pin on her ailment after recent research and it's called SBS. (More on that later in the blog when i update shortly.)
Many thanks for writing. My mum appreciates the thought as well do I. Hope your mum has improved.
